Contribution to Science:

     1. My career has focused on working with communities to develop models of prevention education and care/treatment to address infectious diseases, particularly                    HIV/AIDS & HCV. The HIV Youth Peer Education Curriculum was a 1999 partnership project with the WV Department of Education and resulted in a national model                  for youth peer education that is still in use. The 2000 Tennessee AIDS Centers of Excellence was a partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to                             develop and implement an integrated system of care for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. It resulted in a drastic change in statewide care and treatment for                               individuals living with HIV/AIDS and a manual that became a national model for care delivery that is still in use in Tennessee. During my tenure as a member of the               Executive Committee of the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD), I brought together AIDS Directors from thirteen southern states to                   produce a document to make the argument that the AIDS epidemic had moved into the southern states, but the federal funding was still going to large                                       metropolitan areas. This document was presented to Congress and resulted in the reallocation of federal Ryan White CARE Act Title II funds in the 2004 federal                       reauthorization of the CARE Act. A 2008 study of HIV/HCV co-morbidity was completed for my dissertation research. This study contributed to the body of                                   knowledge showing that intervention in the electronic health record to remind infectious diseases specialists to refer co-morbid patients for HCV treatment                             significantly increased referral for treatment and HCV treatment in co-morbid patients.

       2. During my tenure as the Director for the Office of Emergency Medical Services, electronic patient care records were implemented in all ambulances statewide. We                partnered with the University of North Carolina EMS Performance Improvement Center to create a data collection and data storage system to inform care for                            patients utilizing EMS services statewide. This publication was a description of that project and a look at data utilization.
